The Professional Way
Please read instructions carefully before proceeding. When planning to pave your patio, driveway, pool area, etc., the following requirements must be considered. The specific criteria may not necessarily agree with local codes and regulations. If no local codes or regulations exist, refer to the minimum standards of the F.H.A. or V.A. requirements.

Before laying your paving stones, remove as much soil as necessary from the area where the Pavers are to be installed. To properly figure the correct depth, measure the thickness of your Paver, allow one inch for the masonry sand leveling bed and 0-12 inches aggregate depending on the nature of the base soil and the particular use for which the Pavers are to be utilized. The slope recommended for adequate water runoff is ½ inch per foot. To prevent movement of the edge stones, some form of restraint must be used. This can be either building, concrete curb or sidewalk, treated redwood or other suitable materials. A 1" bed of concrete sand (½ particle size is recommended) should be used for placing the pavers hand tight against each other.

Spread the gravel evenly and tamp down, using either a vibrating compactor (they can be rented at various places around town) or a lawn roller.
